Throughout the game, we unpack this with Alta. Why does she need to overwork herself? What is she running from? When she drinks tea and takes a break, she reminisces, letting us peek into her past, revealing slivers of herself in moments of forced stillness.
Besides growing your own strange fruits and collecting tea leaves to brew new drinks, your stay at Wanderstop also equips you with a trusty broom and garden shears. You can use these to tidy up the clearing of little piles of leaves or gnarly, spiky weeds.
If you already think you might enjoy a game like this without more convincing, just go play it knowing that I give Wanderstop an enthusiastic recommendation. Then you can come back here later to say, “Wow, thank you so much Ms. IGN reviewer, this game has left me feeling strangely hallowed out and yet so full at the same time.”
Clearly, Boro has taken a tea leaf out of their book and created the world's slowest machine. Alta can add flavors with delicate precision, or blindly chuck any old thing in there and see what comes out.
As Boro reminds Alta at one point, just because you can’t take the decorations you love with you, is that any reason not to make your surroundings more beautiful while you’re here? Isn’t decorating for the sake of enjoying your own personal space enough on its own?
She's bold, brave, and doesn't care about anything other than beating the next opponent – her tunnel vision propelling her from battle to training session and back to battle again. Alta doesn't need breaks and Alta doesn't lose. Until she does.
Wanderstop never actually names it, so I won’t either. But if you know, you know. If you’re living with it, if you’ve watched someone struggle with it, you’ll recognize it in Alta before she does.
He’s patient. He listens. He respects Alta’s feelings without invalidating them, but also without indulging them in a way that lets her spiral deeper. He is, in every way, the calm in the storm that is her mind.
I loved the characters in this game in ways I didn’t anticipate, from the adorkable pretend-knight Gerald and his overbearing love for his son, to the boisterous Nana, whose fiercely competitive nature lands her shop on Wanderstop’s doorstep to try and “run you out of business.
There’s this one cutscene with Monster—a moment so heavy, so emotionally charged—that I know I would’ve been bawling if there had been music. And that’s my one gripe with the soundtrack: That scene needed a BGM.
I’m not promoting self-diagnosis, by the way. But I do appreciate that we finally have Wanderstop Gameplay the resources to learn about these things, to put words to feelings we never knew how to articulate.
This colossal lifestyle change usually takes place within a simple opening cutscene, a quick dusting of lore before we get to the real meat of the game: growing turnips.
